Mayon exhibits increased volcanic activity, Phivolcs warns
GUINOBATAN, Albay—Mayon Volcano’s increased seismic activities could mean that steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may occur, the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned on Saturday, Sept.6.
In an advisory, Phivolcs detailed that since midnight, Mayon Volcano exhibited 26 volcanic earthquakes, some of which were reaching 2.7 local Magnitude and originating from depths of 5 to 10 kilometers.
The earthquakes were recorded from the volcano’s northeast side, which has been exhibiting non-uniform inflation or swelling since October 2024.
“[Phivolcs] would like to remind the public that Mayon Volcano is at Alert Level 1, which means that it is at an abnormal condition,” according to state volcanologists.
The volcano has been at Alert Level 1 since March 2024 when Phivolcs lowered its status from Alert Level 2 after observing “steady decline” in volcanic activities.
For now, Phivolcs has advised the public to refrain from entering the 6-kilometer danger zone and civil aviation authorities to avoid flying near the volcano’s summit.
